He became a minister himself, inspired by his father's associate, Benjamin Mays, and by the teachings of Gandhi, whose nonviolent approach to social change he adopted. With Rosa Parks's arrest in 1955, King's desegregation efforts began in earnest. He formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and motivated lunch counter sit-ins, the Freedom Riders and the removal of "For Colored Only" signs.
